Initially, the Federal government had declared April 9 and 10 as holidays for the Muslim-Ummah to mark the successful completion of a month-long spiritual rejuvenation. However, an additional day, April 11, was later included when the crescent Moon was not spotted.
In Anambra’s capital city, Awka, residents are apprehensive about the economic repercussions of the unexpected extension. Many individuals, speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria, voiced their concerns, emphasizing that they had made plans to resume economic activities and were unprepared for the extra day off.
Chief Felly Akosa, former Chairman of the Awka Chamber of Commerce, criticized the decision, describing it as “unfair to the economy” due to the lack of preparation for the additional holiday. While acknowledging the significance of celebrating the Muslim holiday, Akosa highlighted the need for careful planning to avoid disrupting business activities.
Similarly, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene, National Vice President of Igbo apex social-cultural body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, echoed concerns about the economic consequences of the prolonged holidays. He emphasized that the policy would lead to significant economic waste as businesses are forced to halt operations.
The sentiments expressed by Anambra residents underscore the importance of balancing cultural and religious celebrations with economic considerations to ensure sustainable development and prosperity for all.
