Bayelsa Government Cites Security Concerns In Blocking Pro-Wike, Tinubu Rally

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has announced that his administration will not allow the proposed pro-Wike rally in Yenagoa, citing concerns over security and the need to preserve regional peace. While emphasizing his government’s commitment to upholding constitutional rights, including the right to peaceful assembly, Governor Diri stressed that the peace and security of Bayelsa must remain intact, particularly given the ongoing political tensions in neighboring Rivers State.

“We are not a government that goes against the rule of law. We value and protect the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Governor Diri stated. He continued, explaining that as the chief security officer of the state, he must ensure that Bayelsa’s peace is not disrupted by external influences. He further noted that the political climate in Rivers State could have implications for Bayelsa.

The Governor described hosting a rally amid the political tensions in Rivers as “unwise and counter-productive,” especially considering President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state. Diri clarified, “Some individuals want to hold a mega rally here, but we are not yet in a political season. While I do not stop anyone from exercising their rights, I must act in the best interest of our state.”

Governor Diri emphasized that any activity that could incite unrest or destabilize Bayelsa would not be tolerated. He also reminded the public that all public gatherings must adhere to proper protocols, citing the example of First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s scheduled visit, which was communicated to the state government in collaboration with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

In closing, Governor Diri called on Bayelsans to continue promoting peace and unity and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining law and order throughout the state. “Let us work together to ensure Bayelsa remains a peaceful and stable state for all,” he urged.
