Internal Crisis Threatens Labour Party In Enugu As Mass Defections Loom

The Labour Party (LP) in Enugu State is facing significant internal turmoil, with reports suggesting that a mass defection is imminent due to ongoing disputes within the party. Growing discontent among key members has led to preparations for their defection to rival political parties. This unrest follows a series of internal conflicts that have weakened the party’s unity since the 2023 general elections.…READ MORE….

One of the most notable developments came with the defection of Chijioke Edeoga, the Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate, who rejoined the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday. Edeoga was formally welcomed at the PDP secretariat in GRA, Enugu, where he expressed gratitude to Governor Peter Mbah and the state party leadership for facilitating his return. He pledged renewed commitment to the PDP and urged party members to support Governor Mbah’s developmental agenda for Enugu State.

Edeoga’s defection follows a series of departures from the Labour Party, including six members of the Enugu State House of Assembly who were elected under the LP platform but have since joined the PDP. These lawmakers—Ejike Eze (Igbo-Eze North I), Johnson Ugwu (Enugu North), Princess Ugwu (Enugu South Rural), Pius Ezeugwu (Nsukka West), Amuka Williams (Igbo-Etiti East), and Osita Eze (Oji River)—have further weakened the Labour Party’s position in the state legislature.

In response, Harrison Ogara, the LP Assembly spokesman, acknowledged that the defectors were within their rights to move to another party.

With the defection of its gubernatorial candidate and several lawmakers, the Labour Party’s future in Enugu State appears uncertain. Party insiders warn that additional defections could occur in the coming weeks unless the leadership takes swift action to address the internal crises.
