Bloodshed In DRC: Over 700 Killed As Rebel Clashes Escalate
The death toll from the escalating conflict between Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) forces and M23 rebels has surged past 700, marking a dramatic rise in casualties…READ MORE…
According to the DRC health ministry, as of Thursday, 773 bodies had been recorded in hospital morgues in and around Goma, the capital of North Kivu province. This is a significant jump from Monday’s count of 71, the day M23 rebels seized control of Goma in their latest offensive.
Goma, a resource-rich city with abundant gold, coltan, and tin reserves, has been the focal point of intense battles. The conflict has also triggered widespread destruction, with humanitarian agencies struggling to respond amid reports of looted aid warehouses and offices.
United Nations (UN) spokesperson Stephane Dujarric confirmed that approximately 2,800 people have been injured, warning that the numbers are expected to climb.
“Humanitarian organizations in Goma are still assessing the impact of the crisis, including the looting of aid warehouses and offices,” Dujarric stated.
The M23 rebel group, widely believed to be backed by Rwanda, has accused the Congolese government of failing to honor past peace agreements. Meanwhile, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, cautioned that the rebels are rapidly advancing toward Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province.
Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye has also voiced concerns about the growing violence, warning that the crisis in eastern DRC could escalate into a full-scale regional conflict.
“If eastern Congo is not at peace, the entire region is at risk. If this continues, war may spread across the region,” Ndayishimiye cautioned in a statement posted on social media.
He further warned, “If Rwanda continues its territorial expansions… I fear war may even reach Burundi.
