One of the illegally released lynx has died following its capture, according to caretakers. The incident occurred after two lynx were trapped in the Dell of Killiehuntly near Kingussie on Thursday, and two more were caught on Friday, one of which passed away overnight.

The animals were captured using humane traps and transported to the Highland Wildlife Park. Dr. Helen Senn, head of conservation at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), expressed sadness over the death, stating, “After extensive efforts to capture these animals safely and humanely, we were very sad to discover that one of them has died overnight. We are conducting a postmortem to determine the cause of death.”

Dr. Senn criticized the release, highlighting the stress and risks imposed on the lynx. “This unfortunate development demonstrates the folly of abandoning these amazing animals in the wild without preparation or consideration for their welfare,” she said.

The surviving lynx from the pair has been transferred to Edinburgh Zoo for quarantine. The RZSS noted that the captured lynx are tame and accustomed to human interaction.

Edward Mountain, a Conservative MSP for the Highlands and Islands, suggested the releases were deliberate, calling for authorities to focus on identifying those responsible. “These animals cannot magically appear,” he said.

Police Scotland continues its investigation, with officers and wildlife experts examining the area.

The release has drawn criticism from conservation groups. Peter Cairns, director of the Lynx to Scotland project, emphasized the harm caused by illegal actions, stating that such releases undermine efforts to responsibly reintroduce Eurasian lynx to the Highlands.

In 2021, a consultation was launched to gauge public opinion on reintroducing lynx to Scotland, but the recent incident has sparked fresh concerns over wildlife crime and animal welfare.
