Speaking at the prestigious 2024 public lecture titled ‘Recent Developments in a Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market: Issues, Options and Way Forward’, Governor Cardoso, represented by Dr. Usman Opanachi, emphasized the urgent need for patience from Nigerians as the CBN works tirelessly to bolster the Naira.

Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Governor Cardoso assured the public that the apex bank is fully committed to implementing effective measures to counter the free fall of the Naira, which has significantly impacted the country’s economy.

Highlighting the root cause of the currency’s decline, Dr. Opanachi pointed out the persistent issue of excess demand for foreign exchange, a longstanding challenge that the CBN has been grappling with over the years.

He elaborated on the CBN’s shift in approach, emphasizing a move towards market forces playing a greater role in determining the Naira’s value. This strategic shift aims to promote a more sustainable and balanced foreign exchange market, ultimately fostering economic stability.
