urging enhanced monitoring and preparedness.

HMPV, a single-stranded RNA virus first discovered in the Netherlands in 2001, causes symptoms similar to the common cold and influenza, including cough, fever, nasal congestion, and fatigue. Although the virus has an incubation period of three to six days, it can lead to severe complications like pneumonia, especially among infants, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

The virus spreads through respiratory droplets or contaminated surfaces. Recent outbreaks in China and isolated cases in India have increased global attention to its potential spread.

In an advisory issued on January 6, 2025, the NCDC, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, confirmed that it is actively monitoring global trends and developments regarding HMPV. Despite no unusual rise in respiratory infections linked to HMPV in Nigeria, the NCDC remains vigilant.

“While the current surveillance data does not show any alarming trends, the NCDC is proactively enhancing measures to bolster Nigeria’s preparedness and response,” the advisory stated.

In partnership with international health bodies like the WHO, US CDC, and UKHSA, the NCDC conducted a dynamic risk assessment and has classified Nigeria’s risk as moderate. This classification helps shape preparedness strategies and decision-making.

Strengthened Measures at Points of Entry
The NCDC is working closely with port health authorities to ensure enhanced readiness at international points of entry (PoEs). This includes identifying quarantine facilities, distributing infection prevention materials, and providing information to raise awareness among travelers and frontline health workers.

Expanded Surveillance and Testing
The NCDC also announced plans to integrate HMPV testing into its National Influenza Sentinel Surveillance (NISS) network across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Testing for HMPV will now be carried out at sites that are already testing for COVID-19, with additional support provided to laboratories in states with international airports to expand testing capacities.

The NCDC reassured Nigerians of its commitment to public health safety, emphasizing the importance of proactive measures in managing and reducing risks related to HMPV.
