The groundbreaking declaration was made by the Chairman of the Edo APC shadow poll, Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River, following the meticulous collation of results from all 18 local government areas.
Amidst an atmosphere charged with anticipation, the announcement resonated from the prestigious Lushville Hotel and Suites nestled in the heart of the Government Reservation Area (GRA), Benin.
Senator Okpebholo clinched a resounding victory with an impressive tally of 12,433 votes, outshining his closest rival, Dennis Idahosa, the esteemed representative of Ovia constituency in the House of Representatives, who secured 6,541 votes.
This landmark triumph catapults Okpebholo into the spotlight as the APC’s official flagbearer for the forthcoming gubernatorial showdown in Edo State.
The direct primary exercise comes on the heels of a tumultuous and inconclusive ballot conducted last week under the oversight of Governor Hope Uzodimma.
With the intervention of the APC National Working Committee, the initial primary was deemed inconclusive amid controversies sparked by the premature proclamation of Dennis Idahosa as the victor.
Governor Uzodimma’s assertion of Idahosa’s lead, purportedly with 40,483 votes, faced fervent opposition within the party ranks.
The rerun of the primary not only rectifies the contentious issues that marred the previous endeavor but also underscores the APC’s unwavering commitment to upholding transparent and democratic practices in candidate selection.
