EFCC, JTF Apprehend 115 Suspects, Seize Millions In Enugu Sting Operation

In a major crackdown on illegal currency activities, a joint operation involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and a Joint Task Force (JTF) comprised of elite teams from the Nigeria Police Force and Nigeria Customs Service has led to the arrest of 115 suspected currency racketeers in Enugu State…..READ ALSO Ex-Kwara Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed Faces N10bn Fraud Charges: EFCC Set To Arraign On Friday

The coordinated sting operation, executed on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, targeted clandestine bureau de change operators, currency speculators, and street hawkers engaged in illicit foreign exchange markets along Owerri Road, Ogui, Enugu State.

Among the apprehended suspects, consisting of 113 males and 2 females, authorities seized a staggering sum of N110,700,000.00 (One Hundred and Ten Million, Seven Hundred Thousand Naira), $8,368.00 (Eight Thousand, Three Hundred and Sixty-Eight United States Dollars), as well as other foreign currencies including £145.00, €2,725, 900 South African Rands, 32,000.00 CFA, 100 Turkiya, and 500 Bank Mozambique currencies in various denominations. Additionally, a safe abandoned by one of the street hawkers was recovered during the operation.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that a number of the apprehended suspects are foreigners from Niger Republic.

These captured racketeers will face the full force of the law as they are promptly processed for legal proceedings.
