Sylva, who served as Bayelsa governor from May 2007 to April 2008 and later from May 2008 to January 2012, vied for the position against a backdrop of political competition.

While results were still being collated in Kogi, INEC declared a winner in Imo, where Governor Hope Uzodimma of the APC emerged victorious, defeating Samuel Anyanwu of the PDP, Labour Party (LP)’s Nneji Achonu, and 15 other opponents. Uzodimma secured 540,308 votes, surpassing PDP’s Anyanwu with 71,503 votes and LP’s Achonu with 64,081 votes.
