of Prof. Aisha Maikudi, the current acting vice-chancellor, to the position.
The Governing Council of the University, under the leadership of Air Vice-Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita, is proceeding with the selection process despite concerns over Prof. Maikudi’s qualifications. While she holds a law degree from the University of Reading in the UK and a Ph.D. from the University of Abuja, some critics have raised doubts about her relatively brief experience as a professor, with only three years in the role. Nevertheless, Maikudi, recognized as Nigeria’s youngest professor of law, has garnered both support and opposition regarding her candidacy.
The controversy escalated recently when attempts were made to fast-track her appointment as the substantive VC, triggering tensions within the university. Reports revealed that two Senate members, Professors Kasim Waziri and Rosemary Udeozo, walked out of a crucial meeting in protest against the allegedly biased criteria for the VC selection. These concerns were further compounded by reports that 40 candidates were shortlisted for interviews without full consultation with the Senate.
In a bid to maintain control over the selection process, Maikudi reportedly took steps to replace Prof. Waziri on the joint selection board and convened an extraordinary Senate meeting. The meeting, which was reportedly brief, saw her motion to replace Prof. Waziri seconded by a Senate member. Afterward, an invitation for the interviews was extended to the shortlisted candidates, with accommodations arranged at the Silver Green Hotel.
The interviews, scheduled to take place at the university’s main campus, are set to proceed, with each candidate expected to present their original documents as part of the evaluation process.
