Suzanne Shepherd, the esteemed actress renowned for portraying the mother of Edie Falco’s Carmela Soprano on “The Sopranos,” has passed away at the age of 89.

Her representative informed CNN in a statement on Sunday that Shepherd died at her New York City home on Friday. Although the cause of death remains undetermined, Shepherd had been grappling with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, according to her representative.

Shepherd’s illustrious career spanned decades, featuring iconic roles in both film and television, including appearances in “The Sopranos,” “Goodfellas,” “Requiem for a Dream,” and “Mystic Pizza.”

In 1988, Shepherd earned her first official Hollywood credit for her role as Aunt Tweedy in “Mystic Pizza,” starring alongside Julia Roberts and Vincent D’onofrio. She continued to make notable appearances in films like “Working Girl” and “Uncle Buck” in the late 1980s.

Her breakthrough came in 1990 when she portrayed the mother of Karen Hill (Lorraine Bracco) in “Goodfellas,” a film that garnered six Oscar nominations, with Joe Pesci winning for his supporting role.

Throughout the 1990s, Shepherd continued to contribute to the film industry with roles in movies such as “Lolita,” “Living Out Loud,” and “Trees Lounge.” However, her most iconic role was as Mary DeAngelis in the Emmy-winning HBO series “The Sopranos,” where she appeared in 20 episodes as the mother of Carmela Soprano (Edie Falco) between 2000 and 2007.

Ray Abruzzo, her co-star from “The Sopranos,” expressed his sorrow at Shepherd’s passing, describing her as “a force of nature.”

Her most recent credit, according to IMDb, was this year when she appeared in the war-era film “The Performance” alongside Robert Carlyle, Jeremy Piven, and Maimie McCoy.

Shepherd is survived by her daughter, Kate Shepherd, son-in-law Miles McManus, and granddaughter Isabelle Shepherd, as confirmed by her representative.
