Cash Is Still King: eNaira Faces Adoption Challenges In Nigeria
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has disclosed a marginal decline in the value of the eNaira, the country’s official digital currency. According to its Monthly Economic Report for October 2024, the eNaira value fell by 0.16%, dropping from N18.35 billion in August to N18.32 billion by the end of September…READ MORE…
This development comes despite the CBN’s continuous efforts to enhance financial inclusion and strengthen Nigeria’s payment system infrastructure.
Physical Cash Still Dominates
In contrast to the decline in eNaira value, the total value of notes and coins in circulation (CIC) rose significantly, climbing from N4,292.72 billion in September to N4,530.90 billion in October 2024. The report highlighted the ongoing dominance of physical cash in Nigeria’s economy, despite the CBN’s push toward a cashless society.
eNaira: Progress and Challenges
Launched in October 2021 as a digital complement to Nigeria’s currency, the eNaira has shown progress, recording a 31% year-on-year increase in value by the second quarter of 2024. However, its adoption faced challenges in the third quarter, with a slight decline in value to N18.35 billion, now further slipping to N18.32 billion.
The eNaira aims to:
- Enhance financial inclusion by integrating unbanked populations.
- Reduce cash management costs.
- Improve transparency in revenue collection.
- Support government welfare initiatives and Diaspora remittances.
- Strengthen the payment ecosystem’s resilience.
However, the digital currency struggles to gain traction in a society heavily reliant on physical cash.
