Ceasefire Reached: Israel And Hezbollah Agree To 60-Day Truce Amid Rising Tensions

US President Joe Biden welcomed the agreement, stating it could lead to a “permanent cessation of hostilities.” He also emphasized that the US would spearhead efforts to push for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Despite the ceasefire, tensions remain high. Israeli officials have warned displaced Lebanese citizens not to return to their homes due to ongoing security risks.

The agreement follows months of escalating violence. On Tuesday, Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon killed 25 people, and hours before the ceasefire was finalized, Israeli forces bombarded Beirut’s southern border with 20 strikes in just two minutes. In retaliation, Hezbollah launched drones into Israeli territory.

The conflict had escalated in August when Israeli forces began a ground invasion of Lebanon. On August 25, Israel carried out preemptive airstrikes involving 100 fighter jets, targeting thousands of rocket launchers at Hezbollah-controlled sites.

In retaliation, Hezbollah fired hundreds of rockets and drones into Israel, claiming that over 320 rockets were launched as part of the “first phase” of its operation. The group described these attacks as revenge for the assassination of a senior commander in Beirut, which they alleged was carried out by Israel.

In mid-September, explosions in Lebanon caused by pagers, a low-tech communication device used by Hezbollah, led to the deaths of at least 12 people and injuries to 2,750 others. Israel was widely blamed for the explosions, though it did not officially comment on the incident.
