At the APC secretariat in Owerri, the state capital, Okewulonu addressed party members, recalling his recent resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its Board of Trustees.

“You’ll remember that a few months ago, I submitted my resignations from both the Peoples Democratic Party and its Board of Trustees,” Okewulonu stated. “My decision to leave was reached after significant reflection and extensive consultations with my family, political colleagues, and well-wishers.”

He expressed that his departure from the PDP stemmed from a belief that the party’s core values had been persistently eroded and ultimately lost.

“My hiatus from political activities gave me the opportunity to critically assess the political landscape in Imo,” he remarked. “Given the ongoing conflicts and divisions within both parties, which should ideally serve as Nigeria’s primary opposition, I found myself questioning whether I could, as a respected figure in Imo and Nigerian politics, continue to support an ineffective and nearly absent opposition, or if I should engage in efforts to enhance the lives of my constituents.”

Reflecting on Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration, Okewulonu praised the governor’s accomplishments.

“After five years, I am convinced that the 3R administration of Senator Hope Uzodimma has acted in the best interest of the people of Imo State, striving to deliver effective governance,” he noted. “The significant road projects and other infrastructural advancements, along with human capacity building initiatives by the Uzodimma administration, stand as clear evidence of this.”

Governor Uzodimma welcomed the newcomers, underscoring the importance of their decision.

“APC was previously perceived as an outsider due to past challenges, and we suffered from a mistaken identity. Now, the APC is the only party that genuinely cares for the people of Imo,” he stated, describing the defection as a sign of APC’s increasing influence in the state.

“The true stakeholders who desire progress for Imo are now joining the winning party. If we fail to address our people’s issues, history will hold us accountable,” the governor added.

Uzodimma appreciated Okewulonu and Nnaji’s decisions to join the party, comparing it to recruiting elite athletes.

“Conscience is an open wound that only the truth can heal. I thank Okewulonu and Chuma Nnaji for becoming part of our ranks—we now have our own ‘Ronaldo’ and ‘Messi’ in the APC,” he remarked.

Nnaji, a former Deputy Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, expressed trust in APC’s leadership, stating, “We didn’t arrive alone; we brought over 3,000 supporters who share our belief.”

Reports indicate that other prominent defectors included Paschal Obi, a former member of the House of Representatives from Ideato South, Tochukwu Okere, representing Owerri Federal Constituency, and several other key political figures.
