The groundbreaking ceremony was led by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Joseph Utsev, who described the project as a transformative step in tackling water supply issues and improving the quality of life for over 1.5 million residents of Dutse and surrounding areas.
Utsev highlighted that the project aims to address a daily water supply gap of 10 million liters, which has been made possible through years of planning and the Federal Government’s intervention, including an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and detailed designs. He noted that the Federal Executive Council, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, approved ₦59.46 billion for the project, which is expected to be completed within 24 months.
The Minister outlined several key components of the project, including the construction of 35 industrial boreholes equipped with solar-powered pumps, a 1,000m³/hr water treatment plant with supporting infrastructure, and reinforced concrete storage tanks located strategically.
Additionally, the project will involve laying 56.6 km of HDPE pipelines for water transmission, installing solar systems, transformers, and generators to power the facilities, as well as developing administrative and staff buildings at the project sites.
Utsev emphasized the project’s multiple benefits, such as job creation, economic growth, and improved access to clean drinking water. He also announced the formation of a dedicated Project Implementation Unit composed of representatives from the Ministry of Water Resources, Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, and the Jigawa State Government to ensure timely implementation and budget compliance.
Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State praised the Federal Government’s efforts to tackle the ongoing water scarcity in Dutse and its surroundings, stating that the project would significantly advance the state’s development and fulfill President Tinubu’s commitment to prioritizing infrastructure and basic necessities.
Other attendees, including Hon. Sada Soli, Chairman of the House Committee on Water Resources, the Emir of Dutse, Alhaji Hameem Muhammad Nuhu Sanusi, and the outgoing Managing Director of Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, Ma’amun Da’u Aliyu, expressed their support for the initiative.
The ceremony included a project overview presented by Mr. Mukaila Babarinde, Director of Water Supply Services at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation.
