Court of Appeal Suspends Emir Sanusi’s Reinstatement

In its January decision, the appellate court had annulled the Federal High Court’s ruling which had voided the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024, which reinstated Sanusi and dissolved newly created emirates. The court ruled that the Federal High Court had no jurisdiction over chieftaincy matters, which fall under state high courts.

The Kano State government appealed this ruling to the Supreme Court and sought an injunction to halt the execution of the appellate court’s decision. The Court of Appeal granted the injunction, maintaining the status quo until the final decision of the Supreme Court.

Justice Abang emphasized that the balance of convenience favored the applicant, reinforcing the importance of protecting Sanusi’s rights as he had previously served as Emir for five years.
