The high court had issued an order preventing the EFCC from taking action against Bello pending the outcome of a fundamental rights suit he initiated, effectively stalling the EFCC’s attempts to prosecute him on 19 counts involving allegations of money laundering and misappropriation of N80.2 billion.

Despite obtaining an arrest warrant from the Federal High Court in Abuja, the EFCC faced hurdles in apprehending Bello at his Abuja residence, leading to a delay in his arraignment.

In response, the EFCC has lodged a formal appeal against the Kogi State court’s restraining order, arguing that it obstructs the agency’s statutory duties to investigate and prosecute economic crimes.

During recent proceedings, Bello’s legal team cited ongoing appellate proceedings as grounds for adjournment, while the EFCC maintained its stance on proceeding with the trial.

Today’s hearing at the Court of Appeal is anticipated to shed light on the legal standoff, clarifying whether the EFCC can move forward with its prosecution of the former governor amid ongoing legal challenges and procedural complexities.
