Dangote Refinery’s Euro-V Petrol Launch Marks New Era for Nigeria

For the first time in decades, Nigerians will gain a clear understanding of the country’s true fuel consumption as the Dangote Refinery begins production of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol. This historic moment was announced by Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, during the official rollout of the Euro-V petrol from the world’s largest single-train refinery, with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day.

The commencement of PMS production comes 28 years after Nigeria’s four refineries ceased domestic refining, marking a significant milestone in the country’s energy sector. Speaking at the refinery in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, Dangote emphasized that this development would boost the industrial and manufacturing sectors, drastically reduce fuel imports, save foreign exchange, and contribute to stabilizing the naira. These efforts are expected to lower inflation and reduce the cost of living for Nigerians.

Accompanied by key figures from Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), including Vice President of Oil and Gas Devakumar Edwin and Group Commercial Operations Director Fatima Aliko-Dangote, Dangote described this achievement as a transformative moment for Nigeria, signaling an end to years of dependency on fuel imports.

“This is a momentous occasion because Nigeria has not produced petrol for many years,” Dangote stated. He expressed deep gratitude to Nigerians for their support and praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for fostering an environment that made this achievement possible. “Today, we are here to celebrate and give thanks to God Almighty for bringing us to this point where we can produce gasoline. Many doubted we would achieve this, but we have delivered.”

The introduction of the Euro-V petrol by the Dangote Refinery is not just about meeting local demand but also positioning Nigeria as a key player in the global energy market. Dangote highlighted that the refinery’s output is of the highest quality, meeting premium standards globally, including those in Europe and America. This new fuel, cleaner and more efficient, promises to enhance vehicle engine longevity and reduce carbon emissions due to its ethanol-based refining process.

In his address, Dangote also touched on the “Naira for Crude” and “Naira for Products” initiatives introduced by President Tinubu, which aim to stabilize the naira by reducing the market demand for dollars by 40%. He explained that this refinery would provide a clearer view of Nigeria’s true fuel consumption, allowing for more accurate monitoring of fuel distribution.

While the refinery guarantees the availability of petrol in Nigeria, Dangote clarified that the pricing of the fuel remains under the control of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL). “Our focus is on ensuring that the products are available—that’s what I can guarantee,” he said.

The introduction of Dangote’s Euro-V petrol into the domestic market is seen as a significant step forward for Nigeria, both in terms of energy security and economic stability.
