Edo: FRSC Threatens To Clamp Down On Trucks Conveying Passengers Alongside Goods

During a sensitisation exercise with the Aduwawa Truck Drivers chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Benin City, the Edo State FRSC Sector Commander, Paul Okpe, emphasized the need to stop truck drivers from carrying passengers with goods and warned them to desist from the practice.

Okpe stated that the purpose of the exercise was to engage the leadership of the union on safe driving practices, instill a safety culture, and discourage the use of trucks for both transporting goods and passengers.

“We are happy that the drivers are keying into the exercise,” Okpe said, expressing gratitude for the drivers’ support. He also highlighted the drivers’ assurance of cooperation and the steps they pledged to take to eradicate the menace.

He reiterated that the FRSC would commence enforcement actions against erring drivers but expressed confidence that with the drivers’ support, the issue would be addressed effectively.

The FRSC commander urged drivers to embrace road safety culture and refrain from carrying passengers, animals, and goods together, emphasizing that it is not a safe practice.

In response, the chairman of NURTW Heavy Truck, Aduwawa branch, Alhaji Badamasi Muhammed, praised the FRSC for the sensitisation and pledged the union’s full support. Muhammed highlighted the union’s concerns over the situation and expressed optimism that government intervention would lead to its resolution.

He recounted a past accident where 50 people died due to a truck carrying both cows and human passengers, emphasizing the dangers involved. Muhammed promised the union’s collaboration with the FRSC in educating members about the risks associated with combining goods and passengers in trucks and the importance of ending the practice.
