TUC President, Festus Osifo, addressed the media following the fallout of the National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, calling out the governments for the delay.
Osifo highlighted that while the last wage award paid to workers was in February 2024, those for March and April 2024 have yet to be disbursed. He urged the government to release the payments along with regular salaries.
While acknowledging the efforts of some states in promptly remitting the wage awards, Osifo criticized states like Benue and Anambra for lagging in workers’ welfare payments. He also mentioned Imo, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Kebbi, and Katsina as equally lagging.
Regarding the recent increase in electricity tariffs, Osifo described it as hasty, emphasizing the need for proper stakeholder engagement and adherence to due processes before implementing such changes.
Osifo expressed disappointment over the delay in the operation of the Port Harcourt refinery, which was expected to commence production by April according to government promises. He stressed the importance of making the refinery operational to alleviate fuel scarcity.
The TUC president also addressed the issue of insecurity, noting its adverse effects on agriculture and the economy. He urged the government to prioritize security measures to enable farmers to resume agricultural activities.
Lastly, Osifo emphasized the importance of a new minimum wage in reflating the economy and called on the Minimum Wage Committee to expedite the process of unveiling a new minimum wage, highlighting the significance of purchasing power in stimulating economic growth.
