Comrade Fabian Nwigbo, representing the NLC in the region, highlighted the erosion of the value of the current N30,000 minimum wage, which took effect in 2019, due to inflation. He emphasized the unfortunate situation where Nigerian workers are reportedly among the least paid in West African countries.
Nwigbo pointed out the significant increase in the prices of essential commodities since 2019, such as garri, rice, beans, and fuel. He cited examples of the current prices compared to those in 2019, illustrating the pressing need for a substantial wage adjustment to ensure workers’ livelihoods keep pace with the rising cost of living.
Additionally, Nwigbo mentioned the steep rise in rental prices, indicating the economic challenges faced by workers in the region. He underscored the importance of revising the minimum wage to reflect the current economic realities and ensure the well-being of workers across the South-East.
