Edo State Initiates Gratuity Payments After 12-Year Delay

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has announced the resumption of gratuity payments owed to pensioners since 2012, a significant step towards alleviating the long-standing issues faced by retired civil servants in the state.

Governor Okpebholo emphasized his administration’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of retired civil servants, who have spent their careers serving the state.

The statement noted, “For over a decade, many of our retirees have endured hardships due to the non-payment of their gratuities. This administration is putting an end to that suffering.”

“I have approved the allocation of N1 billion for the first phase of payments, and we are committed to clearing all outstanding entitlements,” he added.

The governor reiterated his administration’s dedication to restoring the dignity of pensioners by ensuring they receive the benefits they are owed without further delays.

“We acknowledge the sacrifices made by our retirees, and it is unacceptable that they have had to wait so long for what is rightfully theirs. We will not only address these arrears but also implement measures to prevent similar delays in the future,” Okpebholo stated.

He reiterated the government’s goal of clearing all outstanding gratuities in phases, allowing retirees to enjoy the rewards of their labor.

The governor assured that the disbursement process would be conducted transparently and fairly, with pensioners receiving payments in structured batches based on a verification process.

“This is only the beginning. We will not neglect our pensioners. We are determined to ensure that those who have diligently served Edo State are treated with the respect and care they deserve,” the governor concluded.
