Nigeria Shows Interest In Hosting The 2030 Commonwealth Games
The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) has announced that it has successfully submitted its expression of interest by the March 28, 2025, deadline to bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. However, a formal bid can only proceed with the endorsement of the Nigerian government…READ MORE…
In a previous attempt, Nigeria lost the bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which was awarded to Glasgow.
Tony Nezianya, the spokesperson for the NOC, stated that Nigeria’s proposal to host the 2030 Games in its capital city, Abuja, would provide a unique opportunity to highlight the country’s development, enhance its international reputation, and revitalize its sports culture.
The last time Nigeria hosted a major multi-sport event was the African Games in Abuja in 2003.
The NOC emphasized that this experience would serve as a strong foundation for Nigeria to organize the Games again, demonstrating its capability in managing logistics, hospitality, and the necessary infrastructure development for such large-scale events.
“This would also create a compelling narrative regarding the nation’s progress and readiness for hosting international events,” read the NOC statement.
The next Commonwealth Games are set to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from March 17 to March 29, 2026. Originally, the Australian state of Victoria was scheduled to host the event; however, the government withdrew its bid due to escalating costs.
