The creation of the Bureau follows the enactment of the Ekiti State Electricity Power Sector Act of 2023, signed into law by Governor Biodun Oyebanji in October 2023.
A government statement released in Ado-Ekiti outlined the Bureau’s key responsibilities, including:
- Enforcing the provisions of the electricity law
- Issuing licenses and permits for electricity generation, transmission, and distribution
- Overseeing annual energy efficiency compliance certification for vendors and marketers of energy products
- Certifying energy professionals, contractors, and companies
- Conducting electrical inspection, monitoring, and certification of new and existing electricity networks
- Enforcing statutory technical electrical standards and regulations for safety and security
Additionally, the Bureau will undertake functions previously handled by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the National Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA).
During a recent meeting in Ado-Ekiti, Dare David, the Executive Secretary of the Bureau, reiterated the commitment of the Oyebanji administration to the welfare of the people, particularly in establishing an efficient and effective independent electricity market in the state.
David commended the Oyebanji Administration for its efforts in completing the 5-megawatt Independent Power Project, which currently provides uninterrupted power supply to government offices and key installations in the state capital.
