Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Rt. Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, made these remarks during the opening of the inaugural OSH Summit in Abuja. She emphasized the importance of addressing workplace mental health as part of creating a safer and healthier work environment.

“Currently, Nigeria faces significant OSH challenges. However, we are committed to changing this narrative by engaging diverse stakeholders to foster a safety-first mindset and develop a resilient safety and health culture across industries,” Onyejeocha said.

The summit, themed “National Occupational Safety and Health Management System,” introduced initiatives like Nigeria’s 2024 OSH Country Profile, updated safety regulations for the construction sector, and a National Workplace Emergency Preparedness Guide.

The Minister stressed the critical role of mental health, drawing from the recent World Mental Health Day campaign, which urged prioritizing mental well-being at workplaces. She argued that supportive environments enhance productivity and stability, benefiting both employers and employees.

Acknowledging the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) support in implementing policies for safe work environments, Onyejeocha called for ongoing collaboration to meet global OSH standards.

Nyamali John, a director at the Ministry of Labour and Employment, highlighted the urgency of protecting workers as Nigeria undergoes rapid industrialization. He reiterated the importance of policies prioritizing workers’ safety and well-being to mitigate workplace hazards and risks.

The summit marks the start of a collaborative journey toward safer and healthier workplaces for all Nigerians
