FG Threatens To Stop Funding Tertiary Institutions With Poor Performance
The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, has issued a stern warning that the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) will withdraw funding from any underperforming Centre of Excellence that it established eight years ago. Speaking while receiving two reports from TETFund’s ad hoc committees, Mamman underscored the government’s commitment to promoting excellence in tertiary education. He emphasized the need for scholars to deliver on their scholarship and produce world-class research outcomes. Mamman stressed that the government’s aim is to equip institutions with the necessary resources to provide high-quality education and skills development opportunities.
Echoing the minister’s sentiments, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc Sonny Echono, emphasized that funding would be allocated based on performance and achievement of milestones. Echono highlighted the importance of establishing Centers of Excellence to drive research and innovation in key areas.
However, the committees’ reports revealed concerns about the utilization of funds and the performance of some institutions. While some centers have excelled and made significant contributions, others have lagged behind in achieving their objectives. The reports recommended measures to address underperformance, including providing bailout funds and imposing a moratorium on non-performing institutions.
Moving forward, TETFund will closely monitor the progress of Centers of Excellence and ensure that funds are disbursed transparently and efficiently. The government remains committed to promoting excellence in tertiary education and will continue to hold institutions accountable for their performance.
