FG To Integrate Digital Postcode System Into MDAs To Improve Service Delivery
According to Ireporter Online, the Federal Government has begun plans to integrate the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System into the operations of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) as part of efforts to enhance service delivery and strengthen public sector efficiency.
The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Didi Walson-Jack, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ engagement held in Abuja on the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, organised by the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy in collaboration with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST). The event, themed “Embedding the Nigerian Digital Postcode in Public Service Delivery,” brought together key stakeholders to deliberate on the adoption of the system across government institutions.
Walson-Jack, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Service-Wide Office, Dr Abdul Sule Garba, explained that the initiative is aimed at sensitising MDAs on the importance of integrating the digital postcode system into their operations. She noted that its adoption would significantly improve efficiency, strengthen governance, and support Nigeria’s broader digital transformation agenda.
She described the digital postcode initiative as a strategic reform with the potential to enhance public administration, service integrity, and digital governance nationwide, adding that its success would depend on the collective commitment of all stakeholders involved. She also reaffirmed the Civil Service’s readiness to support innovations that equip government institutions with the tools and capacity needed to meet the evolving expectations of citizens in the digital era.
In his remarks, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, said the Alphanumeric Digital Postcode System represents a defining milestone in Nigeria’s digital transformation under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu. Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Engr Nadungu Gagare, the Minister said the initiative goes beyond postal reforms, describing it as critical national digital infrastructure.
According to him, the system will enhance governance, improve national security, support financial inclusion, strengthen logistics and e-commerce, facilitate healthcare delivery, improve educational planning, and enable credible census and electoral processes, while also providing geospatial intelligence for evidence-based policymaking.
He further stressed that a functional digital economy depends on reliable addressing infrastructure, warning that the absence of such systems hampers effective planning, slows emergency response, increases business costs, and limits access to essential services and opportunities for citizens.
Also speaking, the Postmaster General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Engr Tola Odeyemi, said the digital postcode system is designed to connect every location in Nigeria to opportunities, government services, commerce, and inclusion. She explained that the GIS-enabled infrastructure assigns every addressable location a unique, machine-readable, and geographically anchored postcode, forming the foundation for smarter governance, improved public services, and broader economic inclusion.
