Fuel Scarcity Grips Abuja And Five Other States, Commuters Stranded
A sudden shortage of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, has plunged commuters in the Federal Capital Territory and five other states into transportation chaos. The scarcity has led to the closure of numerous filling stations and exorbitant transport fares, leaving thousands of commuters stranded at bus stops….READ ALSO Fuel Scarcity Worsens Economic Hardship In Akwa Ibom
Affected states include the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Niger, Gombe, Sokoto, and Anambra. The scarcity has prompted transporters to significantly increase fares, taking advantage of the limited availability of petrol.
Reports indicate that many filling stations have shut down due to a noticeable shortage in PMS supply to these regions. This has exacerbated the situation, causing long queues at operational stations, especially those near the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) headquarters in Abuja.
In response to the crisis, oil marketers have arranged a crucial meeting with the NNPC’s retail subsidiary management to address the root cause of the shortages and explore potential solutions. According to Chief John Kekeocha, National Secretary of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), the scarcity stems from a clear supply shortage in Abuja and neighboring states.
However, there is optimism within the industry as the commencement of operations at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery is expected to alleviate the fuel scarcity. Additionally, the Port Harcourt Refining Company is projected to start producing refined petroleum products soon, offering another potential solution to the ongoing challenges.
Despite the current difficulties, there is hope that these developments will mitigate the impact of the fuel scarcity and restore normalcy to transportation in the affected regions.
