Fuel Scarcity Worsens Economic Hardship In Akwa Ibom
The already challenging economic situation in Nigeria is exacerbated in Akwa Ibom as the state grapples with fuel scarcity, leading to significant disruptions in transportation and market prices. Filling stations, except for NNPC mega stations and Trans Sossa, have ceased operations in compliance with directives from the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association (IPMAN), fearing hefty fines…..READ ALSO Fuel Scarcity Hits Lagos Again: Long Queues And Traffic Jams Grip The City As Fuel Scarcity Resurfaces
This scarcity has prompted black market prices to soar to N1,500 per liter, doubling transportation fares and triggering a ripple effect on food prices in local markets.
IPMAN attributes the suspension of operations to infractions by the Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association (NOGASA), leading to product impoundments and extortion. They have directed members to close stations from the public, imposing a hefty fine of N300,000 for non-compliance.
In response, the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association Of Nigeria (PETROAN) has urged its members to resume operations, prompting a clash of directives. Governor Umo Eno has intervened, directing security agencies to monitor borders and prevent any disruption of fuel delivery services. He warns against creating additional hardship for the people and pledges to confront any group attempting to do so.
The fuel scarcity exacerbates the economic woes already faced by Nigerians, particularly in Akwa Ibom, where the disruption in transportation and market prices adds to the existing challenges. As stakeholders navigate conflicting directives, residents anxiously await relief from the pervasive economic hardship.
