Kano And Jigawa Lead In Tobacco Smoking Across Nigeria, CISLAC Reports

According to the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), Kano and Jigawa states are at the forefront of tobacco smoking in Nigeria. The event, organized by CISLAC with support from the Tax Justice Network, aimed to address the high prevalence of tobacco use in the state, particularly among the youth.

Adoga expressed concern over research findings indicating that Kano and Jigawa rank highest in tobacco usage in Nigeria, with a significant portion of users being youths, some even underage. To combat this trend, he emphasized the urgent need for the state government to adopt and implement the National Tobacco Control Act (2015) and Tobacco Tax Policy. Doing so, he argued, would be crucial in safeguarding the lives of the youth, who represent the future leadership of the nation.

The engagement sought to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and advocate for the adoption of relevant laws at both the legislative and executive levels. Key stakeholders, including traditional and religious leaders, youth groups, civil society organizations, and the media, were involved in discussions to amplify the message and drive meaningful action against tobacco consumption.
