Fuel Scarcity Grips Lagos: Residents Stranded As Petrol Hit N1,000 Per Litre

Reportedly, workers and business people faced extended waits at bus stops, unable to find transportation due to the unavailability of vehicles. The scarcity led to a surge in transport fares, with the price of petrol skyrocketing to as high as N1,000 per litre. Consequently, fares for routes such as Badagry to Mile 2 rose from N800 to an exorbitant N1,500.

At popular bus stations in Badagry, including Aradagun, Mowo, and Agemowo, scenes of residents struggling to secure transportation were common. Many expressed frustration at the lack of government intervention and called for assistance, suggesting the deployment of Lagos BRT buses to alleviate the transportation crisis in the area.

Moreover, individuals like Mrs. Christiana Adigun, a National Population Commission staff, faced difficulties commuting to work due to the scarcity of petrol. Despite being willing to purchase fuel at the inflated price of N1,000 per litre, obtaining the product proved challenging.

While the NNPC and Mobil fuel stations in Badagry sold petrol at official prices, independent marketers were accused of selling at significantly higher rates, exacerbating the situation. Motorists queued for hours at fuel stations, enduring long waits with no guarantee of obtaining petrol.

Blame for the scarcity was directed at various factors, including a lack of product at NNPC tank farms and the actions of petrol marketers. Allegations surfaced of cross-border illegal petrol dealers purchasing large quantities of petrol for resale in neighboring countries, leaving residents struggling to access fuel for their vehicles.

In response, stakeholders called for increased vigilance by security agents to curb such activities and for the NNPC to enhance supply to ensure adequate availability of petrol across Lagos and beyond.
