The most recent incident occurred in the Rutsiro district of western Rwanda, where two individuals lost their lives to a landslide triggered by heavy rains. In another heartbreaking event, a mother and her child perished in Kigali’s Gasabo district when their home collapsed during a torrential downpour.
The impact of the heavy rains extended beyond loss of life, with widespread destruction of property, including houses, crops, and road infrastructure reported in various regions. The Ministry is conducting a comprehensive assessment to gauge the extent of the damage inflicted.
The Rwanda Meteorology Agency issued warnings predicting continued heavy rains in several parts of the country during the first 10 days of May. In response, the government has urged residents residing in high-risk zones to relocate to safer areas to mitigate the risk of further casualties.
This unfortunate situation evokes memories of the devastating floods and landslides that struck western and northern Rwanda in May 2023, claiming the lives of 135 people. In the face of such recurring natural disasters, concerted efforts are needed to bolster resilience and enhance disaster preparedness measures across the nation.
