Fuel Scarcity Hits Hard In Kwara State

The fuel scarcity plaguing Nigeria has reached critical levels in Kwara State, exacerbating challenges for residents and commuters alike. One factor contributing to the shortage is the delay in production commencement at the Dangote Refinery. With the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) halting importation in anticipation of Dangote Refinery’s operations, the current shortage has been exacerbated.

As a result, commuters in Ilorin are grappling with increased transport fares, as commercial transporters hike prices for short- and long-distance travel. Roadside fuel vendors are selling petrol at exorbitant rates, with prices ranging from N1,000 to N1,400 per litre. Some fuel stations, albeit few, are still dispensing petrol to the public at slightly lower prices, between N850 and N1,000 per litre.

In response to the crisis, the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) is poised to take action, with plans to ensure compliance with the official pump price of petrol by independent marketers in the state capital. However, long queues persist at fuel stations with available stock, leaving commuters stranded for extended periods along major roads in Ilorin.

The fuel scarcity has significantly reduced the number of commercial transporters operating on highways as they struggle to secure fuel for their vehicles. As the search for petrol continues, residents and commuters in Kwara State are grappling with the adverse effects of the ongoing crisis, highlighting the urgent need for solutions to address the fuel supply challenges facing the state.
