Government Takes Decisive Action: Bans Cooking Gas Exportation
In a bold move aimed at stabilizing domestic cooking gas prices, the Nigerian government has implemented a ban on the exportation of cooking gas. Addressing stakeholders at a workshop in Abuja themed “Harnessing Nigeria’s Proven Gas Reserves for Economic Growth and Development,” Ekpo emphasized the need to prioritize the domestic market by halting the export of locally produced cooking gas. By doing so, the government aims to increase the supply available for domestic consumption, thereby driving down prices for consumers.
Ekpo highlighted ongoing discussions with key stakeholders, including the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), as well as major industry players like Mobil, Chevron, and Shell, to enforce this ban effectively. He stressed the importance of collaboration in ensuring compliance and maximizing the impact of the ban on cooking gas exports.
“We are interacting with critical stakeholders to ensure that there is no exportation of LPG,” Ekpo stated. “All LPG produced within the country will have to be domesticated. And when this is done, the volume will increase and, of course, the price will automatically crash.”
The minister’s proactive approach reflects the government’s determination to address the challenges posed by rising cooking gas prices and alleviate the burden on consumers. With concerted efforts and strategic interventions, the government aims to achieve tangible results in stabilizing the cooking gas market and promoting economic growth and development.
