Governor Fintiri Enacts Law Creating 83 New Districts In Adamawa

The newly enacted law replaces the previous legislation, significantly expanding the traditional leadership framework in the region.

This initiative for the new districts was prompted by a public demand that garnered substantial support from citizens across all 21 local government areas.

During the signing ceremony on Thursday at the Government House in Yola, Governor Fintiri expressed optimism that the establishment of these additional districts would help to decrease crime rates.

He also announced that moving forward, the salaries of district heads and their staff will be funded by their respective local government councils. However, he assured that these salaries would be periodically reviewed to align with current conditions, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to addressing the needs of its populace.

Earlier this week, the Adamawa State House of Assembly approved the bill that led to the repeal and re-enactment of the Adamawa State Districts Creation Law, 2024, following the endorsement of the House Standing Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

According to a document detailing the new districts, Mayo-Belwa, Madagali, Demsa, and Hong LGAs will see the highest number of new districts, each gaining seven. Fufore and Jada will have five new districts each, while Michika, Gombi, Yola South, Maiha, Mubi North, Mubi South, and Song LGAs will each gain four. Shelleng, Girei, Ganye, Numan, and Lamurde will have three additional districts, while Toungo will see an increase of two.
