Governor Sule explained that the governors’ primary request is for the bill to be withdrawn temporarily to allow for further consultations and to address any ambiguities. While the bill itself is not the issue, the governors seek clarification on certain provisions before moving forward.

Governor Sule highlighted concerns about the proposed VAT increase from 20% to 60% at the point of generation. He expressed satisfaction that the proposal had since been revised to apply to both the point of generation and consumption. The governors’ position, according to Sule, is to pause the bill’s progress, engage in dialogue, and gain a clearer understanding of its implications.

The governor also noted that steps like the town hall meeting should have been taken earlier by the Tax Reform Committee before submitting the bill to the National Assembly.

In response, Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Tax Reform Committee, thanked Governor Sule for his input. Oyedele acknowledged the committee’s earlier attempts to educate the public and stakeholders before the bill reached the National Assembly, though he admitted that the response had not been as expected. He assured that the committee is open to revisiting discussions to clarify any unresolved issues.
