Senate, NUC Advocate For Increased Number Of Universities In Nigeria

where stakeholders endorsed the proposal for the establishment of the Federal University, Okigwe, in Imo State.

Senator Muntari Dandutse, Chairman of the Senate Committee, and Senator Patrick Ndubueze, sponsor of the Federal University Okigwe Bill, alongside NUC Executive Secretary Mr. Chris Maiyaki, emphasized the need for expanding Nigeria’s higher education infrastructure. Maiyaki highlighted the significant gap in university capacity, noting that with over two million prospective students annually, only 500,000 to 700,000 are admitted, leaving over 1.3 million students without access to higher education.

Maiyaki compared Nigeria’s situation to other nations like Indonesia, which, with a similar population, has around 2,000 universities, while countries like Russia, Brazil, and India have hundreds of thousands of institutions. He assured stakeholders that the NUC was working on regulatory frameworks and capacity-building to support the establishment of additional universities.
