His installation as the traditional ruler of Umuawa Alaocha Autonomous Community marks a significant stride in inclusivity.

Eze Ohaeri, the first son of the late Eze Anyiam Ohaeri, the Utuhutu I of Umuawa Alaocha Autonomous Community, has broken barriers by ascending to the throne despite living with hearing impairment. The coronation ceremony, held at the Community Primary School Umuawa, Abia State, was attended by dignitaries and community members.

Governor Alex Otti, represented by his Special Assistant on Persons with Disabilities, David Anyaele, reiterated the administration’s commitment to dismantling barriers faced by individuals with disabilities. He expressed the government’s dedication to creating an environment where everyone, regardless of their abilities, feels a sense of belonging.

During the ceremony, the newly installed traditional ruler expressed gratitude to the state government for challenging the norm and facilitating his historic appointment. Eze Ohaeri acknowledged the significance of his ascent, not only for the community but also for the state and the nation at large.

“It may interest you to know that this is the first time in the history of this community, state, and nation that a hearing-impaired (deaf) person has been made a traditional ruler. Also, I would like to add that even in the Bible, no hearing-impaired person became king. This is the first of its kind,” he declared.

The historic coronation underscores the strides being made towards a more inclusive society, where individuals with diverse abilities are recognized and empowered to take on significant roles traditionally limited by societal norms.
