the age of 100.
“I invite the American people to come together on this solemn day and pay tribute to President James Earl Carter, Jr.,” said President Biden in his White House proclamation. “I also extend this invitation to the global community to join us in sharing our grief and respect for this remarkable life.”
The Carter Center confirmed the sad news, announcing that Carter passed away peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia. His passing comes just months after the loss of his beloved wife, Rosalynn, who died in November 2023. The couple had spent their later years in the house they built together in 1961.
In February 2023, Carter chose hospice care after deciding to forgo further medical treatments, opting instead to embrace his final years with loved ones around him. His grandson, Jason Carter, shared a poignant message on social media at the time, noting, “They are at peace, and their home remains full of love.”
Despite his failing health, Carter remained politically engaged and expressed his wish to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.
A Lifetime of Service and Legacy
Carter, who served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, made history as the longest-living US president, surpassing George H.W. Bush in 2019. After leaving office, Carter dedicated his life to humanitarian causes, particularly his work with Habitat for Humanity, election monitoring in developing countries, and teaching Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia.
Carter’s humanitarian efforts, alongside his commitment to peace and democracy, earned him a lasting legacy, making him a globally admired figure long after his presidency.
