Talks are set to resume in Doha on Tuesday to finalize the agreement, which Biden has strongly advocated for. He described the deal as a breakthrough that would secure hostages’ release, halt hostilities, enhance Israel’s security, and enable significant humanitarian aid for Palestinians affected by the war.

A midnight breakthrough led to a draft agreement being presented to both sides by mediators, with key figures from the outgoing Biden administration and President-elect Donald Trump’s team involved. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan expressed optimism about concluding the negotiations, while Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized Hamas’s role in finalizing the deal.

If successful, the agreement would result in the largest release of Israeli hostages since the conflict began, with an initial group of 33 hostages expected to be freed. Talks will also address the phased release of the remaining hostages and a gradual Israeli troop withdrawal. Hamas remains committed to a deal, aiming for a comprehensive end to the war and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, while Israel prioritizes dismantling Hamas.

The conflict, which escalated in October 2023 with Hamas’s cross-border attack, has caused significant casualties and displacement, with over 46,000 deaths in Gaza, according to local health officials. The impending inauguration of President-elect Trump on January 20 serves as a de facto deadline for reaching a resolution.
