House Of Representatives Advocates Fair Compensation For Nigerian Workers

In a session held on March 6th, the House directed its pertinent committees in Labour and Employment, Finance, and National Planning to formulate strategies for ensuring that Nigerian workers receive living wages aligned with the economic realities.

This decision, championed by Minority Leader Kingsley China and 37 other members, underscores the House’s commitment to addressing the issue of minimum wage in Nigeria. The resolution will be forwarded to the Senate for joint approval.

The federal government has recently initiated discussions through a tripartite committee involving representatives from the executive, organized labour, state governments, and the private sector to negotiate minimum wage adjustments.

Presenting the motion on behalf of the sponsors, Deputy Minority Leader Aliyu Sani Madaki (NNPP, Kano) highlighted the nation’s escalating inflation rates. He emphasized the challenges faced by average Nigerians in accessing basic necessities such as food, water, housing, education, healthcare, transportation, and clothing.

Madaki underscored Nigeria’s obligation as a signatory to the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights to ensure fair remuneration for workers, as outlined in Article 23 of the Declaration.

The Deputy Minority Leader also referenced the Speaker’s concerns regarding the necessity of a living wage to address issues of insecurity and corruption. He stressed the urgent need for measures to enhance Nigerians’ income, thereby mitigating increased poverty and restoring public trust in the government.
