“Due to actions at our counter at the Lagos Murtala Muhammed International Airport that jeopardised our flight safety and continued for four days, we had to cancel our scheduled flights to Lagos as of Tuesday, May 21,” the airline stated.

The airline emphasized its commitment to passenger and crew safety, which has been a priority since it began operations in Nigeria in 2006. Turkish Airlines’ decision to resume flights follows meetings with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

The airline acknowledged that the NCAA and FAAN have assured additional security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. These assurances were reinforced by a written statement from the FAAN General Manager, promising unprecedented measures to ensure operational safety.

“We want to thank the authorities for the assurance they provided, and we would like to emphasise that Turkish Airlines is the airline flying to more countries than any other in the world,” the statement read. “We adhere fully to the laws and regulations of the countries we operate in and act in accordance with international business ethics principles.”

Turkish Airlines also addressed the recent picketing of its Lagos office by the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), which led to the flight cancellations. The airline described the picketing as illegal, noting that the National Industrial Court had issued injunctions on April 30 restraining NUATE and its affiliates from disrupting its business.

The NCAA intervened in the matter on Thursday, facilitating an amicable resolution and paving the way for Turkish Airlines to resume operations, albeit without a specific resumption date initially. However, the airline has now confirmed that flights will resume on May 25, provided the promised safety measures are in place.

The airline reiterated its commitment to flight safety and operational integrity, indicating that it will continue to engage with Nigerian authorities to ensure a secure environment for its operations.
