During these operations, 19 drug hawkers and shop owners were arrested and are currently being investigated at NAFDAC’s headquarters in Abuja.

Mr. Umar Ahmed, Assistant Chief Regulatory Officer of the Investigation and Enforcement Unit, Federal Task Force, NAFDAC, stated that these raids are part of ongoing efforts to rid the country of unwholesome goods and counterfeit drugs. He highlighted the increasing prevalence of drug hawkers in the FCT as a major concern, necessitating the agency’s enforcement actions.

“We have raided not less than 55 hawkers’ outlets in Kpaduma in Asokoro District of the FCT, and Nyanya. Some of these hawkers absconded, but we were able to arrest nine of them, and equally arrested 11 of them on Thursday,” Ahmed said.

Ahmed noted that the nationwide raids were prompted by complaints from stakeholders, including the Department of State Services (DSS). The seized products from these operations have an estimated value of about N58 million for Friday’s raid and N70 million for Thursday’s raid. The confiscated items include hard drugs, herbal preparations, aphrodisiacs, and analgesics, with many being controlled substances such as tramadol and cocodamol.

“These drugs are very expensive, most of them are hard drugs, including herbal preparations. The majority of the drugs are aphrodisiacs and analgesics, with hard drugs like tramadol, controlled drugs like cocodamol and the rest,” Ahmed added.

The crackdown aims to sanitize the market and protect consumers from the dangers of unregulated and potentially harmful substances.
