This move is part of ongoing efforts to ease overcrowding in the state’s correctional facilities.

Justice Abdu-Aboki’s decision was primarily based on two key factors: the inmates’ deteriorating health and their prolonged detention without trial. Reports indicated that many of the released individuals were suffering from severe health issues that worsened during their time in custody. The Chief Judge pointed out that inadequate medical care within the facility had further endangered their health, and releasing them would allow them to seek proper treatment outside.

Additionally, the lengthy detention of several inmates without trial raised serious concerns about potential violations of their rights. This factor was pivotal in their release, as prolonged detention without trial contradicts judicial principles.

Justice Abdu-Aboki, while addressing the freed inmates, urged them to maintain good behavior and avoid actions that could lead to reoffending. To support their reintegration into society, each was provided ₦10,000 for transportation.

The Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Ado Inuwa, commended the Chief Judge’s action, emphasizing that it not only reduces overcrowding but also reflects a compassionate approach toward the health and rights of inmates. He acknowledged the Chief Judge’s commitment to improving conditions in Nigeria’s correctional system and ensuring fair justice.
