Lagos Shuts Shina Peller’s Quilox Club, Gives Reason

For “noise pollution,” the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has closed the popular Quilox Club on Ozumba Mbadwe Street in Victoria Island.

According to LASEPA General Manager, Dolapo Fasawe, the club owned by a member of the House of Representatives, Shina Peller, was closed for failing to comply with directives on event organization and not obtaining a sound control permit.

Fasawe stated that the agency received distress calls from concerned neighbors, along with video evidence, to back up their claims about alleged environmental nuisances perpetrated by the club.

“Lagos had earlier increased the decibels to accommodate leisure/hospitality business interests. We, however, urged them to apply for sound control permits before hosting events to enable us to reach out to the host community of the intended programme and further deploy our officials to the venue for proper monitoring and prevention of excessive noise pollution,” she explained.

According to her, an invitation was extended to Quilox Club, as was extended to every other stakeholder, but it was ignored by management for reasons unknown to them.

She stated that “no individual or group is larger than society,” and that the agency is still working to ensure that all interests are protected by the law.

Peller, who represents the federal constituency of Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa in Oyo State, left the All Progressives Congress (APC) in June 2022 to join the Accord Party ahead of the 2023 general elections.

His club was previously closed in December 2019 due to noise pollution and traffic congestion, and again in July 2020 due to violations of COVID-19 guidelines.
