Directed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, this initiative aims to provide financial relief by selling staple foods at a 25% discount across the state’s five divisions.

Part of a comprehensive strategy unveiled on February 22, this move seeks to mitigate the harsh economic realities confronting Lagosians.

Featuring a range of staple foods such as rice, beans, garri, bread, eggs, tomatoes, and pepper at discounted rates, the markets have drawn significant crowds. Locations like Alubarika Primary School in Bariga and Gbagada Junior High School witnessed large numbers of residents taking advantage of the reduced prices, reflecting the initiative’s immediate impact.

To ensure order and security within the market premises, the state has deployed security forces including the Nigeria Police, NSCDC, LNSC, and LASTMA.

Community feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with residents like Mrs. Amaka expressing satisfaction with the affordability of the food items and calling on governors in other states to adopt similar measures to support their citizens.

Hygiene and cleanliness standards at these food markets have also been emphasized, with visitors urging vendors and traders to maintain high standards to ensure a safe and pleasant shopping experience.

The ‘Ounje Eko’ initiative not only offers immediate financial relief but also serves as a model for public intervention in food supply and pricing.

Mrs. Moshood, another resident, commended the Lagos State government for establishing these markets, noting the convenience they bring to the shopping experience during tough economic times.
