The labor unions attributed the strike to the federal government’s failure to address their grievances despite an earlier ultimatum issued to that effect.

The statement, jointly signed by NASU’s General Secretary, Peter Adeyemi, and SSANU’s President, Mohammed Ibrahim, highlighted the government’s withholding of four months’ salaries of their members as a key reason for the industrial action.

According to the statement, since the government has not taken steps to resolve the salary issue, they have decided to proceed with a 7-day warning strike, starting from Monday, March 18, as the first step.

The unions emphasized that the strike action would be comprehensive, with no exceptions or concessions.

Recall that SSANU and NASU had previously threatened to shut down all university hostels and disconnect all university utilities in a bid to draw attention to their members’ plight.

Responding to the ultimatum issued by the unions, the federal government assured that it would continue engaging with the two university-based labor unions. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this assertion while addressing journalists regarding the threatened strike action by the unions.
