Manuga To Nigerians: Female Politicians Deserve Respect, Not Unfounded Lab

Manuga highlighted the various forms of violence women in politics endure, including harassment, emotional and psychological intimidation, and cyberstalking. She encouraged women not to be deterred by the challenges and biases they face in their political journeys.

“Violence against women goes beyond physical assault—it includes harassment, intimidation, and psychological abuse,” Manuga said. “In politics, we face this at different levels. For instance, when a woman attempts to contest for a position, she often hears discouraging comments like, ‘This is a man’s position.’ Such remarks are a form of emotional and psychological violence.”

Manuga also addressed the negative narrative around female politicians, adding, “It is common for some people to regard women in politics as promiscuous, but this perception is completely untrue. Female politicians face these unwarranted attacks, even in the political arena, during debates.”

She emphasized the need for a collective effort to combat gender-based violence in all its forms and called for a shift in societal perceptions toward women in leadership roles.
