Reps Launch Efforts To Dismiss CCT Chairman Danladi Umar Amid Misconduct Claims

The motion cites Section 17(3) of the Fifth Schedule of the 1999 Constitution, which outlines the procedure for the removal of the CCT chairman. This move follows the Senate’s resolution last week calling for Umar’s removal under Section 157 of the Constitution.

However, some senior legal experts have criticized the Senate’s approach, arguing that Section 17(3) of the Fifth Schedule is the appropriate legal framework for such action.

Umar has faced controversy throughout his tenure, with numerous criticisms of his conduct and decisions at the tribunal. Ihonvbere noted that, according to the Constitution and the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, the President, supported by a two-thirds majority of both the Senate and House of Representatives, is required to act on the matter, if supported by a motion praying for Umar’s removal due to misconduct.
